What goes in which piece

Nine pieces, three kinds. The cubes take clothes and show them through a mesh top. The zip pouches take the small things that otherwise end up at the bottom of the case. The frosted bags take what you keep apart from clean clothes and still want to see. Here is one way to fill them, piece by piece.

Change it to suit your trip. What matters is that each piece holds one kind of thing, the same kind every trip, so your hand goes to the right one without looking.

The cubes

Each cube has one two-way zipper, one webbing handle on the side and one mesh top. They come in the color you pick: Grey, Burgundy or Hot Pink. Empty, they collapse flat.

Large cube, 15.7 x 11.8 x 5.1 in

Trousers, jeans, a dress, the sweater. Fold them to the width of the cube and stack them, heaviest at the bottom. At the other end this is the cube you lift by its handle into the bottom drawer, as it is.

Medium cube, 11.8 x 11.0 x 5.1 in

Tops. Roll the T-shirts and stand them on end in a row. Through the mesh you can pick the one you want, open the zipper at that end and pull it out without lifting the others.

Small cube, 7.9 x 8.3 x 5.1 in

Socks and underwear. Or, on a trip with a hotel gym, the workout kit: shorts, a top and the socks that go with them, kept away from everything else.

The pouches

Three zip pouches, in the same color as the cubes. They are for the things too small for a cube and too easy to lose in a case.

Large pouch, 13.8 x 10.6 in

Sleepwear, or the layer for the plane: a thin knit, a scarf. Lay it on top of the cubes. It is the first thing you reach for at night, so nothing else comes out with it.

Medium pouch, 10.2 x 9.8 in

Paper. Printed tickets, the booking confirmation, a notebook and a pen. Or underwear, if you would rather keep the small cube for socks alone.

Small pouch, 9.8 x 6.3 in

Everything with a plug: the phone charger, cables, the plug adapter, the earbuds. One pouch, one place to look when the phone is on its last bar.

The bags

Three storage bags, frosted and see-through, the same in every set. You can see what is inside without opening them, which is what you want for the things you keep apart.

Large bag, 17.7 x 13.8 in

Shoes, sole to sole. The bag goes at the wheel end of the case, away from the clean shirts. You can see which pair is which without taking them out.

Medium bag, 13.8 x 9.8 in

Laundry. Pack it empty, folded in the lid. Worn socks and shirts go in as the trip goes on, so the cubes only ever hold clean clothes. At home, you empty it straight into the machine.

Small bag, 6.7 x 9.8 in

The swimsuit and goggles. Or the small things that otherwise end up in three different pockets: hair ties, a sleep mask, earplugs.

Your toiletry bag and your pockets

Toiletries go in your own toiletry bag, packed on top of the cubes so it lifts out at the security line. Your phone, wallet and keys stay in your pocket.

Keep the map the same

The set is most useful when nothing moves between trips: tops always in the medium cube, chargers always in the small pouch, shoes always in the large bag. After a few trips you stop reading the mesh and reach for the right piece by its place in the case.

The whole set weighs 0.49 lb (220 g). For packing it into a carry-on in order, read how to pack a carry-on with packing cubes.

Want it drawn for your own trip or case? The pack planner lays the nine pieces out to scale and shows what goes where.

The set is three cubes and three pouches in Grey, Burgundy or Hot Pink, and three frosted bags. See the set.
